The Ultimate Guide to Autumn Cycling

Get ready for Autumn cycling with our guide to seasonal bike prep, essential gear and the most scenic foliage routes in the Oxfordshire Chilterns.

As the seasons change Autumn brings some of the most scenic riding conditions but with that comes some challenges.

  • Tyre check - swap out your faster rolling summer tyres for more grippy models better at dealing with wet, slippy conditions. Lower your tyre pressure slightly to help increase traction on slippery surfaces. Continental Gatorskins do a great job or check out our other tyres.
  • Inspect your brakes - check your pads aren't worn and give your cables a once-over.
  • Switch from a dry weather lubricant to a heaver lube like Muc Off Hydrodynamic Lube, see our selection here.
  • Time to attach some mudguards so you don't get wet and muddy and protect others if you're riding in a group. Have a look at our selection here.

Essential clothing for Autumn riding

Dressing for Autumn is all about adaptability. The right layer combination will keep you comfortable when the temperatures fluctuate between cool mornings and warmer afternoons.

  • A windproof gilet or jacket are great pieces of clothing which keep the cold out and can be stowed away easily in a jersey pocket. Arm warmers are another great piece which can be easily packed in a pocket if you get too warm.
  • Cold fingers and damp feet can ruin a ride so invest in a good pair of long fingered gloves and some water resistant overshoes.
  • If you want to add some reflective or high visibility items we offer various pieces from jackets to trouser clips.

Be seen be safe

Charge your lights and make sure they still operate correctly. We offer a range of lights along with lighted flat or lighted clip in pedals to ensure you are seen.

Choose your routes

Here in the Chilterns we have some of the prettiest routes to see the colour changes in the leaves especially with the dense Beech Woodlands transforming into vibrant shades of amber, copper and gold.

Christmas Common & Watlington Hill - the roads in and around pass through thick Beech forests that form a natural golden canopy in later Autumn.

The Stonor Valley - Running South towards Henley-on-Thames the valley offers views of the Woodlands rising on both sides of the road.

Ashridge Estate - great for gravel or mountain biking, get lost in the woods and the Autumn colours.

Don't let cooler weather park your bike for the season. With a little preparation you can extend your outdoor riding well into Autumn. Or if you need some help just call to book in for a service 01844 335 913.
